Mother’s Day is fast approaching. These handmade gifts will show Mom you care.

BUILD-A-BAG

This fancy purse is made from a placemat.

What you’ll need:

  • Placemat made from durable material in Mom’s favorite colors
  • Heavy-duty thread
  • A needle that can handle thick thread
  • Scissors
  • Sewing pins

What you’ll do

1. Place the placemat vertically and face down on the table. Fold the bottom up until the top.

2. The sides should be pinched at the doubled-up portions.

3. To make a pouch, sew along the pins. Use a sewing machine or hand-stitch heavy thread to make a pouch. To close the bag, fold down the top

KEY TO MOM’S HEART

This handy keychain with leather tassels is sure to please Mom.

What you’ll need:

  • A piece of soft, thin leather measuring at least 3 1/2″ x 12’’
  • Sharp scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Keyring
  • Any leather glue
  • Rubber band

What you’ll do:

1. Measure, mark, and cut the leather in two pieces: one 3 1/2″ x 11” and one 1 1/2″ x 1/4″.

2. Place a pencil line 1 inch from the edge along the largest piece.

3. You can make even cuts along the strip, up to the pencil line. Cuts of 3/16″ should be fine.

4. The small leather piece should be folded over the keyring. It should then be glued to the end of the uncut strip.

5. Apply a thin line of glue to the edge.

6. Start at the end of the critical chain and roll the strip tightly. The uncut edge should be kept at the top. Make sure you glue the end.

A LOVING PATH

These mosaic stepping stones will brighten Mom’s garden.

What you’ll need:

  • Two disposable aluminum 9-inch cake pans (not pies)
  • Quick-setting concrete mix in a 10-pound bag
  • Pebbles, colored tiles, colors, flat glass marbles, bottles caps, or broken pottery
  • 2 to 2 1/2 cups of water
  • Bucket, at least 10 quarts in size
  • Large trowel or spoon made of metal
  • Newspaper
  • Two pieces of cardboard (minimum 2 feet x 2ft)
  • Use paper towels
  • Dust mask, rubber gloves, and goggles

What you’ll do:

1. Dust masks, gloves, and goggles are required for outdoor newspaper work. In a bucket, mix 2 cups water and concrete mix. You must work quickly. If necessary, add 1/2 cup water to dry areas.

2 . Place the pans on a piece of level cardboard. Place concrete in pans. Smoothen the top

3. Allow sitting for 20 minutes.

4. Push the decorations into the concrete. Cleanse the rim. Allow sitting for two days. Clean the decorations and take out any pans.

5. Place the finished stepping stones at ground level.

BUILD-A-GARDEN

This unique potted garden will be a hit with mom!

What you’ll need:

  • A 5-foot to 6-foot length of rebar rod steel rod
  • Sledgehammer
  • Clay pots
  • Potting soil
  • Small plants
  • Measure tape
  • Pencil

What you’ll do:

1. Mark 2 feet of rebar and measure it.

2. You can hammer the rebar into the ground until you reach the mark.

3. The largest pot should be threaded down the rod to the ground.

4. It should be filled with soil and buried 1 inch below its top.

5. Place the next pot on the soil, and tip it onto the soil.

6. You can add pots to the rim, each resting on the rim.

7. The pots should be filled with plants and moist soil. To prevent soil from escaping during watering, leave a 1-inch gap at the top of each pot. The soil should be level.

KEEPING TIME

This hoop clock will keep mom on track.

What you’ll need:

  • 12-inch embroidery hoop
  • A clock kit purchased at a craft shop
  • Fabric – 1/2 yard
  • Scrap cardboard pieces
  • 1 AA battery
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Hobby knife
  • Glue
  • Iron clothes
  • Tape

What you’ll do:

  • Place the hoop on top and draw a circle about 2 inches larger than the hoop.
  • The fabric circle should be cut. Iron any wrinkles.
  • Take the hoop apart and unscrew it. Place the fabric circle on top of the smaller hoop. Place the larger hoop on top. The fabric should be stretched between the hoops. Secure the screws tightly.
  •  Take out the excess fabric.
  •  Two strips of cardboard should be cut and inserted into the back of your hoop. Tape them together.
  •  Use the hobby knife to cut a small opening in the middle of the hoop through the fabric and cardboard.
  •  Follow the instructions for the clock kit, pressing the clock through cardboard and fabric and attaching the hands to the front.
  • Tape or glue the clock/cardboard assembly to the back rim.

HEART NECKLACE

This unique leather necklace will charm Mom.

What you’ll need:

  • 3 feet of leather or cord lacing
  • Tape measure
  • Tape
  • Scissors

What you’ll do:

  • Tape the left side. Only work with the right end.
  • Take a 1-foot measurement from the left end to make this loop.
  • To form loop No. 2, go under, then up, and out of the loop. 1.
  • Continue up to loop No. Continue to loop 2. Then, go back up. 3. Continue to the bottom of big loop No. 2, and then continue down to the top of loop No. 1.
  • Loop No. 1: Go up and under 1. Then thread over and under the No. 2 center loop. 2. Then, thread over and under the center loop No. 3.
  • Tape the left end. Pull on both ends and work your fingers inside the heart to tighten it. As you go, form the heart. Make a V by pinching the bottom.
  • Make a loop with the ends and tie the knot by pulling them through. Be sure to trim excess.
